    Ms Goff:

I just read your article “Barack Obama’s Most Groundbreaking Domestic Policy Speech”.

You stated that it was a “ground breaking POLICY” speech. Could you detail the POLICY initiatives that were contained within? This is like saying that Bill Cosby’s speech in kind was a “policy” speech.

More importantly though you appear to be putting forth a “tail wagging the dog” scenario as you make the case that “high incarceration rates” are having a deleterious impact upon Black families. Why is it that we can’t flip this around and make the case that with the CONSEQUENCE of committing criminal actions (often against other Black people) the cost of being separated from one’s family is simply not worth it. Thus the challenge is placed upon these young Black males who are fathers - not to commit criminal actions that may land them in jail.

It is perplexing to me to see that to argue in the other way the only choice that you and others have is to work with the legal system to reduce the sentences because the sentences are having negative impacts on the Black community. The truth is that criminal actions are having a greater impact on our community. We have witnessed a 52% increase in homicide rates among Black males according to the last FBI crime report.

It is clear by the behavior committed by some of these young Black males that after having worked on their behalf to free them from jail - they would have no problem cutting your throat if doing so stood between their current condition and being in possession of that which is in your pockets. The only way to move forward is to have these males become conscious of their role in life and the need for them to show a bit of “racial dignity” as they do their part to advance their communities rather than being the most threatening agent within their communities.

Instead of working on their behalf in the legislators to prove that society cares for them per the provisions that are provided on their behalf there needs to be an equal amount of time spent where they are directly engaged and asked to do their part.
