Ms. Goff,
As a woman, of indigenous ancestry, I have to take exception to your comments on the Lou Dobbs program this evening. Frankly, given the history of Hispanic people, their repeated acts of genocide against the indigenous peoples of what is now referred to as Mexico, Central and South America, their continued slaughter and enslavement of diverse indigenous peoples of these lands, the Navajo, Apaches, Utes and so many others, including women and children up into the 1900s. Their creation of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, which incidentally was inspired by their African and Arab trading partners, you don’t get to paint them as a marginalized people in your attempt to provide political cover for what is clearly a lousy selection.
In all candor, the “richness” of that culture includes continued enslavement, including that of children, pushing them into forced prostitution, racism, corruption (including corrupt judges, police and all elected officials), culture of bribery, murder, rape, molestation. I have Navajo friends who have written frequently about Hispanic drug cartel violence and drug gangs attempts to murder, kidnap young girls to sell into prostitution, violent drug gangs on tribal lands. It’s laughable for her to sneer about her “richer” culture, because it’s a culture of exploitation, and the very reason that I can’t name one Hispanic country that isn’t given over to said corruption and violence. They certainly haven’t created any form of government that affords equality and justice.. but perhaps, “richness” refers to the bribes, wealth gained from such corruption?
That said, so many other so called, “rich” and “vibrant” cultures that the extreme left likes to hold up, also are given to the same corruption, exploitation, slaughter, rape, slavery and untold brutality. Again, as an indigenous American, I can well attest to the racism that is pandemic within the various shades of the “rainbow” coalition. Have white people done bad things? Yes, but so have black, brown, tan and all shades in between, yet I don’t see you or other leftists calling them on their corrupt and despotic behaviors.
I find no evidence that Sotomayor’s statements were misrepresented, taken out of context. Her crass joke about policy being made by the judiciary was offensive, and the laughter she shared with her La Racist audience at Berkeley spoke volumes. Perhaps YOU don’t mind about the constitution being treated like so much waste paper, but the rest of the citizenry, who do have the right to speak out, do mind. As to “right wing” and all that nonsense, this woman has been a life long liberal democrat virtually all my life. I was an early supporter of Obama, and voted for him, and I regret it. Not because he’s black, but because he’s a liar and a corrupt fraud. The racist is the one who demands that Obama not be criticized because it’s “racist” to do so. White people criticize corrupt white politicians all the time, so get over yourself.
You appear to be a very advantaged person, and Sotomayor has benefited greatly in this country. The real problems I see in this country are related to class, as Martin Luther King III stated last year. Poor white, black and brown citizens and their children have little to no chances, affluent black, brown and white citizens and their children have every chance, and they don’t need affirmative action, when they can buy their way into anything they wish.
Affluent black, brown and white people aren’t living in tent cities, they aren’t going hungry or without medical care, poor black, brown and white people aren’t so fortunate.
